Earthquake

We just experienced a minor earthquake. We’re ok. The building is still standing. Power’s still on. Preparing a grab bag now in case anything more happens. More info later, though there’s nothing to report now.

Love you all.

more info:

It was 6.7 90 miles east of Cuenca.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/280_0.php
I filled out the survey and it says that it felt like an intesity 4 from here. I thought it was more, but we are at the top of a building.

It doesn’t look like any damage around town. Only heard 1 siren, and the power’s on all around town (which is surprising because it goes off nearly every other day in a thunderstorm.)

Anyway, we’re going to go back to bed and Kelsey won’t get any sleep for all my tossing and turning. What else is new?

Oh yeah, this is my first post on our blog

Finally Settled

Well, it’s official, we’re staying in the apartment. We went to the house and it is almost done and blah blah long story short it’s a better choice just to stay here. We are happy to finally be set on one place and also really excited not to have to move again. So if you come visit now you can’t stay at our big house but you can stay in our big apartment instead. It’s also many times the size of our last tiny house so we are happy.

We had our first mutual today and it went pretty well. We had 3 out of 5 show up, and fed them pizza so they seemed to like us well enough.

Yesterday we went to the boy’s orphanage just to say hi to Sor Teresa and ended up playing with the kids who were done with their homework for a while. They enjoyed Aaron’s animal noises a lot. They got a new little guy yesterday who is really cute but too little for futbol. I’m sure he’ll still have fun on Saturday anyway.

That’s all. Oh wait, we got Skype, so you should too, or if you have it you should use it to call us.

Its true, we were just meant for two blankets

That is what my dear husband said to me the other morning after he had spent another night without any blankets at all. I was pretty sad because I thought shouldn’t married couples share a blanket??? Then I remembered that someone told me the secret to success in a marriage is seperate bedrooms, and I felt better.

On Thursday we went to help move a load of dirt from outside OSSO’s new orphanage to inside for the plants. The dark clouds and lightning in the distance should have formed some sort of warning, but the group of 8 of us found shovels and three wheelbarrows and got to work. Within a minute of moving the first wheelbarrow it started to rain, and within 5 minutes it was torrential downpour. This of course only made us work faster, and turned our awesome dirt into awesome mud. Ishy proclaimed “This is the best experience of my life! We can get dirty, we can roll in the mud, and we can serve!” Way to see the bright side little man, as we were all pretty much soaked and freezing, and eventually gave up because the wheelbarrows were impossible to move across the new mud field. We then all got a nice soak with the hose as the thunder and lightning got closer and closer. Anna Maria brought us something warm to drink and then we all went home.

The other day I found a mighty large cucaracha crawing across the floor and made Aaron kill it. He exclaimed “We’re moving!” Adding another vote along with my mother (“Get the house, big momma’s coming to stay!”) for our house. Speaking of, we went to see it on Thursday and were sad because the workers don’t think working is a good idea so it still is progressing slowly. The landlords told me they were going to the shop (again) to complain, and I asked them to call if they had any news. We decided that if it is not done by next week (Thursday, latest Friday) we will just stay in the apartment until April. Well yesterday Landlord’s daughter calls and reports the workers are there working (ON A HOLIDAY?!?!) and the house should be ready in time. We continue to hold our breath and cross our fingers.

Wednesday through Sunday are the fiestas of Cuenca, and being a block off the main square we have been lucky to see lots of ultra-dangerous fireworks (from the safety of our window) and globos which are little hot air balloons made out of tissues paper that they launch into the sky. They seem to have problems and often light on fire and don’t go up, or get stuck on buildings or trees or whatever is in the way. Maybe some pictures will come later. What is really great about Ecuador is that they have little to no concern for the safety of buildings or people when using fireworks. I was thinking of the Medina Days firework show where they make you keep your boat one million yards away from the firework barge. Not here, you can walk up and touch the burning fireworks should you choose. And if you don’t choose probably one will fall right on you from the sky, either that or a burning globo of death. Isn’t Ecuador great? Good thing I have insurance now.

In a Land Without Pumpkins…

This would be el Puerqueño and La Reina de Los Puerqueños
(Inspired by puerqueños and all the Queen competitions here)
(That is a giant fork that the Puerqueño is holding)
(It is also worth mentioning that after 3 hours of hair doing, half a giant aerosol can of hair spray, and a pound of blue eye shadow, my hair is already going limp, and you can hardly see the eye shadow. But the mascara won’t come off my eyes for a week or so.)
Ishy was torn between crazy calabaza head and ugly teeth guy. Turns out when we got to the mall where the party was he was embarassed and wore neither.

I think he made a better looking Reina than me, I was kind of jealous.

We went to the big newer mall where they had a kids costume contest, which was judged by who could dance the best. Although the skeleton had some good moves, dracula who looked all of 4 had better moves and won a cell phone. We also went through the “Casa de Sustos” a surprisingly well done haunted house. Pitch black the entire time except the occasional flash light from one of the 20 “monsters” that lined the 30 yard maze and things hanging down in your face and even guys in english yelling “I’m going to eat you”. The best part was that I couldn’t see so I had my hands out in front and kept hitting the monsters in the face with my hands. Sammy and I went through together and she made me go first which turned out to be a mistake because they grabbed her from behind anyway. My crown got all tangled in my hair and I was unable to recover my beauty, thus making me forego my desires of becoming La Reina del Mundo.
On another random side note, I was walking in town this morning around 8 and saw this guy in the park who had no legs, and only thumbs on his hands. He was feeding the pigeons and laughing and smiling, and I thought man, I am never allowed to be unhappy again.

Feliz Halloween

I don’t really have anything good to write but I wanted to know what everyone is going to be for Halloween. So you should leave a comment and tell me so I can pretend I am there with you. Also feel free to email me a picture tomorrow. Aaron and I have some pretty great costumes which we will post tonight or tomorrow after we wear them. There didn’t used to be Halloween down here but they heard I was coming and decided to have a children’s costume contest at the mall. So we will go with the Roseros to make sure we don’t look like super duper freaks. Super freaks is enough.

I haven’t found any pumpkins, maybe I will carve a watermelon like I did a couple years ago here. Speaking of which, you should also email me your pumpkin carvings too. Especially if they are really amazing or look like me or the shape of Ecuador.

Viva Los Bomberos

(Aaron has proposed that this blog might alternately be titled: Que Mala Suerte)

Last night we came home to our new apartment at 8 with our newly purchased queen-sized mattress and 8 bags of stuff from the “hipermercado” which is like unto walmart the kind that have the grocery store. Except some stuff is way cheaper than walmart and some is way more expensive. Like towels, but that’s a rant for a different time. Anyway, after getting dropped off by the truck driver with our mattress we got out our keys to open the door and found… it wasn’t the right key. During the day the building is an office building with an electronics store on the bottom floor, so we haven’t ever tried that key (just the 6 others required to get past all the doors to our apartment) Panic quickly set in, as darkness, a lot of stuff, and no home were upon us. The people renting to us are really just a real estate company, so we had no numbers other than their office, which of course didn’t work. Just as I started to call the Roseros to rescue us a young guy showed up with his keys and despite how crazy I sounded he let us in. After I got in the elevator with all the bags, he then helped Aaron haul the mattress up 8 stories on windey stairs. Aaron tried to pay him but he just ran off and we can’t find him again, but if we figure out which apartment is his, he’s getting some cookies.

So we were in the building, but then realized we were perhaps trapped in the building until Monday when the stores and offices reopen. This morning Aaron went down to check to see if we would be able to escape to church but no luck. We kept getting ready anyway, and when it was time to go, we went downstairs and the doors were open. We talked with the guard and he sold us a copy of the key for $.50 so now we can come and go as we please, and I am eager to have words with the rental people tomorrow.

Aaron told me last week when he went to home teach the Bishop that he needed to call a Young Mens and Young Womens presidents. Guess what callings we got today? When we were leaving church today I asked Aaron if he was scared (none of the two young men speak english) and he said no. I was glad. Then he said “I’m terrified”. I also only have two young women, one of them being Sammy Rosero. I’m mostly just excited. (This story was not meant to imply any sort of bad luck, it just happened today so it needed telling)

And the final story: We came home from church and rode up the the 7th floor in the elevator (we live on the 8th, but the elevator only goes to the 7th, well, sort of…) and we get up to the top and we realize the elevator is about a foot higher than the door. And this is an ancient ecuadorian elevator with no alarm button, no phone, and the door will only unlock to open when the elevator is perfectly lined up with the door. We press buttons. We let it rest. We press more buttons. Aaron jumps. Aaron tries to unscrew the metal panel on the door to get to the lock mechanism with a dime. He laments not having his knife he normally carries around. I call Roseros. They can’t believe it. They try hard to figure out who is the building owner, or at least someone who lives in the building. No luck. Its decided its time to call the Bomberos, who often can be found dressed in red cammo, which Aaron points out must be to blend in better with the fire.

I forgot to point out that when I was on the phone with Roseros, Ismael (7) gets on the phone and says “Kelsey! Can you breathe?” “Yes, there is plenty of air” “How do you feel???” “Well, a little bit scared, but mostly I need to go to the bathroom and I’m really hungry” “Hahahahah”

I talk to the Bomberos and tell them our issue and they tell me to not worry they are coming. Then 911 operator guy calls me back and asks all the same questions and says don’t worry he will send someone. He calls back a couple more times with questions, how are they supposed to get in those pesky glass doors that are now locked because the store is closed? I don’t know, bust them in? A lady who lives in the building showed up and let them in, because eventually we hear an alarm, a women’s voice, and some men’s voices. The Bomberos were in the building.

They check every floor, knocking on the door yelling “can you hear me?” I keep yelling back “yes! we are on the 7th floor!” They only hear me when they get to the 6th floor, then they yell at each other and come running up. They ask again how many people are in there, and if we are ok. They mess with the door but we can tell they really just want to bust in the frosted glass part of the door. I try to tell them what’s up with the elevator, and they tell me “be calm, we will get you out” Pretty sure they couldn’t hear us laughing the whole time. After all, it had only been 45 minutes. They get some tools from the lady and open the lock and ta-da we are rescued!!! Our rescuers are a guy in his full fire-fighting outfit, another bombero in shorts and a bombero t-shirt, and a police officer. We thanked them kindly and escorted them downstairs to their waiting firetruck and police car, we locked the door after them, because after all, we now had the key.
(Rodrigo has proposed that the newspaper article will be titled: Dos Puerquenos trapped in an elevator. I’ll tell you what a puerqueno is later.)

Que Suerte

I just had to quickly report that we found somewhere to live for the next two weeks while our house is being finished. Or maybe we will just stay there the whole time? Its on the eighth floor of a building downtown with a beautiful view of the central park and cathedral.

Here is a picture from the window:

Here is another one I took looking the other way out the window:

I´m just frusterated

Last time I was at the Wolff house Alex who is three in response to the insinuation that he had knocked over the train set replied “I´m not a bad boy, just frusterated” I know the feeling. We went to see our house yesterday to see if it would really be ready this weekend and…. They told us another week. Something about the workers not showing up and taking a ton of time etc etc. We went with the landlord to ask the workers who were working on the house adjacent when they thought it would be ready. They said a week (again) and I told them if they got it done really quick I would bring them ice cream and cokes and whatever they wanted. They smiled but I doubt that will really get the job done.

Then comes the next problem. The hotel where we are staying is throwing us out on Wednesday because it is the fiestas of Cuenca and ALL the hotels are booked. And since we likely won´t have a house ready to move into, we suddenly realized we are about to be homeless. After tracking around to a million hotels and calling a million more we found a few spots, but have decided probably we will just get on a bus to somewhere a little out of town and stay at a cheaper not full hotel instead. A little adventure is good when you are homeless and without much of a choice.

Life is still good, we remain without any life threatening illness or even anything keeping us in the house all day. We are enjoying spending time with the Roseros, Sammy and Ismael tell everyone their sister is here, and at church on Sunday when a little girl in the ward was playing with Aaron Ishy said “If Kelsey and Aaron had a girl like that we would be uncle and aunt!”

Ok, more later. Chao.

Y Seguimos

I will try to write a less lengthy blog this time, and maybe more interesting too.

On Saturday we went to the boy´s orphanage where Sor Teresa works. Right now there are 5 boys there, ages 7-12 and we played a rousing game of futbol with them. I felt really great because I am slightly better than the 7 year old. I understand that´s pathetic, and what´s worse is he will probably be much better than me in a couple weeks once he realizes most of my ¨moves¨are based on my legs being three times as tall as his. We had a really good time, and will hopefully make Saturday games a routine.

Aaron continues work on the security system at the new orphanage. The company that installed the cameras & wires did an interesting job so he has been hard at work untangling, rearranging, and thinking of how to rewire more effectively. Aaron also has insomnia, which is bad for him, but has turned out to be good for his business. He spends early early mornngs writing out his plans and creating programs or whatever he happens to be currently working on. The lack of sleep has turned into quite a successful start to his business.

I am about ready with my self-esteem class plan. Hopefully that will get started soon. I have been to see a couple of English schools but they all seem to have just started in October, so I have been told either November or January depending on the school. I think I will just put an add in the paper and do private tutorials or small classes from the house.

Speaking of the house we find out tomorrow when we get to move in. We have our fingers crossed for Thursday, or at latest Saturday. Also our house is unfurnished so we have spent many hours in furniture stores comparing prices and making people laugh when we tell them we need a king sized bed because we are so big. We are starting to feel like grownups with all this house furnishing business.

Well, all is good. That´s about all I have to report. I don´t know that I made this any shorter. Chao.

Amazing Progress

Well it is day 4 and we have managed to get a lot done around here. We have gotten my phone unblocked so I can use it here (not the same number so dont try. If you want my Ecuador number I will give it to you if you want to spend a lot of money talking to me) got Aaron a phone, opened a bank account, and probably found a place to live.

On Tuesday we went and found Sor Teresa working at the boys orphanage, and she was happy to see us, reporting that she had tried to call me in the US twice but I never answered. We will probably go back to play with the kids on Saturday afternoon or help them with field trips/outings.

We probably have an awesome place to live. Probably means that we have an awesome place that is a brand new house that is being finished that we told the owners we want to rent and they agreed and we are just waiting somewhat impatiently for it to be ready to move into. There is just the slightest chance they will be evil and rent it to someone else before we move in, but we dont think so. Did I mention we are moving into a giant house with three bedrooms a living room huge kitchen, dining room, and a sweet patio/courtyard for me to do all the laundry washing and hanging up on. And its close to the Roseros, and not too far from the center of town. In other words, please come visit us and our ample casa.

Aaron will start Spanish lessons on Monday with the group of volunteers from OSSO. He will be fluent in just a couple of weeks for sure. :) I asked one place about teaching English and they told me to come back tomorrow morning.

We had a yelling match with the people that run the hostel we were staying at. We came home this afternoon to find the window to our room had been left open by the maid…. On the first floor… We were not especially pleased to put it kindly and after a good inventory of our stuff moved out. The window was inside the courtyard but still.

We are still good and safe and in good health. We plan to continue on in a similar fashion.

ALSO! Almost forgot. The new orphanage that OSSO built has this security camera system that no one could figure out how to make work, and after three days of working on it, Aaron saved the day and made it work. There was much rejoicing as no one else knew how to do it, and now Aaron plans a lucrative career in alarm/camera installation.

Ok really thats it. Chao.
